What makes a good bookend? It should keep your books standing, of course. But if you are going to look at it every day, why not make it something you actually enjoy looking at?
At Avalglass, we make stained glass bookends by hand in our family workshop in Poland. Each design combines real stained glass with a handmade oak base, turning a practical bookshelf accessory into a small piece of art.
Our collection now includes 21 designs, from flowers and leaves to butterflies, dragonflies, and even a little Sun and Moon. And there is a nice part about collecting them: you don't have to stop at one.
Why stained glass bookends?
Bookshelves have a funny habit of becoming personal.
You start with a few books. Then come the books you haven't read yet, the books you definitely will read this year, and the ones you keep because someone special gave them to you.
Eventually, your bookshelf becomes part library, part memory box.
That is why we think bookends can be more than something that simply stops a row of books from falling over. They can be part of the story.
Our stained glass bookends are made using the traditional Tiffany technique, with each piece of glass cut and assembled by hand. The glass is then paired with a solid oak base, available in both light and dark wood.
The result is something useful enough for everyday books and special enough to leave on display.
Meet the collection
We didn't want to make 21 versions of the same bookend.
Instead, the collection grew naturally around things we love making in stained glass.
Sunflower
The Sunflower Stained Glass Bookends are probably the easiest way to bring a little garden to your bookshelf. The warm yellow petals stand out beautifully against the oak and work especially well with books in neutral or earthy colors.

We have also seen these bookends in customer and blogger photos, and we love how different they look in real homes compared with a studio setting.
Ginkgo Leaf
The Ginkgo Leaf Bookends take a quieter approach.
The fan-shaped leaves have a natural, almost architectural look, making them a good choice if you want decorative bookends without something too colorful or busy.
The design has also appeared in our blogger and UGC photos, where it fits surprisingly well into both modern and more traditional bookshelves.
Gerbera Flower
If the Sunflower is warm and sunny, the Gerbera brings a little more drama.
The flower has a strong shape that works particularly well when you want your bookends to become one of the main decorative pieces on the shelf.
And yes, it still has the very practical job of holding your books in place.

Fall Leaves
The Fall Leaves design is inspired by one of our favorite times of year.
Orange, red, and yellow glass come together with natural oak to create a piece that feels right at home among autumn reading, warm interiors, and a cup of something hot.
It is also a good reminder that decorative bookends don't have to follow one particular season. If you love autumn, there is no rule saying you have to put them away in December.
Monarch Butterfly
The Monarch Butterfly Bookends bring a completely different character to the collection.
The orange and black wings make them an easy choice for nature lovers, butterfly collectors, or anyone who wants something a little more playful on their shelves.
They are also a lovely example of what stained glass can do. When light reaches the colored glass, the design changes with it.

Dragonfly
The Dragonfly Bookends are another nature-inspired design, but with a lighter and more delicate feeling.
They work beautifully in a reading nook, study, or bedroom where you want a decorative detail without filling the entire shelf with color.
And if you are shopping for someone who loves insects, plants, or gardens, they make a rather unusual gift.
Sun and Moon
The Sun and Moon Bookends are a favorite for a slightly different reason.
One side represents the sun, while the other features the moon, making the pair feel like two halves of the same little story.

The wooden base is part of the design
We could have used a simple wooden block and called it a day.
We didn't.
Our bookend bases are made from oak and finished by hand. You can choose between light and dark oak, depending on your interior and the design you've picked.
The wood gives the stained glass enough weight to do its job while keeping the overall look warm and natural.
It also creates an interesting contrast: the glass is delicate and colorful, while the oak feels solid and substantial.
That combination is a big part of what makes these feel like home decor rather than ordinary book stops.
You don't have to buy a pair
Here is something we made intentionally different.
Our bookends can be purchased one side at a time.
Sometimes you simply don't need two. Maybe your books are against a wall, or you have a shelf where one decorative piece is enough.
And if you already own one of our wooden bases, you can purchase the stained glass separately.
All of our wooden bases are designed to work with our different bookend glass designs. So you can change your glass piece when you feel like trying something new, without buying another wooden base.
Today it might be a Sunflower.
Next year, a Ginkgo Leaf.
We like the idea that your bookshelf can change with you.
A collection for people who love books
We originally made bookends because they are useful.
Then we started seeing how people were using them.
Some place them in home libraries. Some use them on smaller shelves with only a handful of favorite books. Others treat them almost like little artworks that happen to hold books.
And that is probably why they make such good gifts for book lovers.
You don't have to know which book they want next. You just need to know that they love books.
